Each day for three months, thousands of Melbourne commuters were treated to an arresting floral display – and an important message “let’s beat bowel cancer”.
The Linlithgow Logo Flower Bed is located neat the Shrine of Remembrance and is visible from the busy thoroughfare of St Kilda Road, Melbourne. The City of Melbourne allocates the flower bed to promote community ser ices and not-for-profit organisations.
For the first time, Let’s Beat Bowel Cancer (a Cabrini initiative) was granted use of the space free of charge.
In October 2011, the Linlithgow Logo Flower Bed was planted with approximately 6,500 plants to spell out the words “Let’s Beat Bowel Cancer”.
Liz Smart, Ambassador for Let’s Beat Bowel Cancer, has a view of the flowerbed from her home, and nominated the charity to be a part of this visually arresting communication idea. Liz is thrilled with the result, describing it as “stunning”, and gave thanks to the City of Melbourne.
“I have watched it almost daily since the ground was fertilised and the planting began, following lines marked out with white paint and string” said Liz.
“The colours gradually bloomed and I have watched many people stop to admire and photograph it,”
The City of Melbourne’s open space service provider, Citywide, managed the design, planting and maintenance of the flower bed.
